If you ask people in Central Connecticut about where the best hot dogs can be found, we’d argue that most folks would have New Britain’s Capitol Lunch at the top of their list. Why? It’s all about the meat sauce.
You heard me right – meat sauce.
Now, we’ve heard that for Germans, the idea of putting meat sauce on top of a sausage is strange, but they’ve never heard of the Chili Cheese Dog – a hot dog topped with a spicy beef and tomato chili and shredded cheese.
Though chili is nice, the meat sauce made at Capitol Lunch puts every hot dog chili to shame. Of course, if we were in Connecticut, we’d just go over to Cappy’s and buy containers of it – but that’s not an option out here, so we had to make our own.
There’s no tomato in our sauce, just lots of meat, spices and veggies. We even reached out to the folks at Capitol Lunch to tell them that they were our inspiration and they’re looking forward to hopefully being able to come out and try it one day.
Warm it up and try it on a hot dog, or add it to tomato sauce to make a Sloppy Joe sandwich. Hell, the folks in Cincinnati even put it on spaghetti and we’re even partial to serving it with bratkartoffeln and a fried egg.
